Protect Your Energy

Usually when we hear the words self-care.. we instantaneously think of face masks, and a bath bomb. While these practices definitely contribute to our well-being, sometimes you gotta dig deeper and get to the root.

A Beginners Guide: Protecting Your Energy

Step 1: Become Self-Aware. In order to evolve you will need to acknowledge how you feel. If you’re unable to identify the negative habits or thoughts you are having, it can lead to conflict down the road — brought on by feelings of anger, resentment, disappointment, sadness, and the list of bad vibes goes on.

Power and choice go hand and hand. Self awareness gives you the power to make empowered choices, so that you can make the necessary changes you want or need. There’s always something you can do to raise your vibration. You always have a choice. It’s just a matter of figuring out what that is.

Step 2: Daily Affirmations. Your thoughts manipulate how you feel and how you behave. What you think about yourself can either empower you or destroy you. Daily affirmations are designed to alter the beliefs about ourselves so we think more positively about ourselves. In one article I read, affirmations were said to be like the psychological immune system. When life knocks you down, you can use your affirmations to pick you back up.

Step 3: Steer Clear of Vampires. Vampires are only good for one thing: sucking the energy out of you. Most times without even noticing, we allow others negative energy to rub off on us. You ever feel like your having the perfect day, and then you hangout with a friend (or family/anyone) and your left feeling drained?

Be more mindful of the vampires in your life and STEER CLEAR. You've heard the saying "birds of a feather flock together".. Surround yourself with good vibes. This can be your friends who just get you, hobbies or places, or just doing things that make you feel good.

Step 4: Set boundaries. You don't have to drastically cut everyone out of your life. Sometimes those vampires in your life can unintentionally be your parents or your co-workers etc. We are all human, with our own journeys. However, you can reclaim your time. Set boundaries.

First, you need to identify what your boundaries are. And then communicate that. Approach the conversation from a empowered confident space. And then, draw the line. Be clear and specific about your needs and expectations.

Boundaries help filter who loves you with conditions vs. unconditionally. When you speak up and your friends/family/whoever honors what is important to you — even if they don’t fully understand — they are showing you their willingness and investment in the relationship. We show our love and commitment within a relationship by allowing each other to fully be themselves.

If they can't respect or consider how you feel (unfortunately some friends/family/whoever will not have the capacity to articulate or accept what you have to say) then it's up to you to decide if the relationship is worth investing your energy into anymore.

Step 5: Let go of What You Cannot Control. I’m so guilty of trying to control what I can’t. There are some things we just don’t have any control over, and that’s OK. Life happens, but what matters is how you react, because that’s what you can control. Life’s frustrations will always get in the way, but that doesn't mean we have to stress ourselves out about it.

Most of us don’t want to let go of things or people we like. So we hang on until they’re forcibly taken away, and even then, we still hold on mentally and emotionally. Not even realizing it's causing stress and unhappiness in our lives. It also keeps us stuck in the past, and keeps us from growing and living our lives freely. If we want to be happy and free, then we need to learn to let go.

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Accept yourself for who you are right now while investing in becoming an even better version of yourself.
